I grew up enjoying watching my older sister participate in high intense sports like volleyball, track and field events. I was however, a member of my high school golf team for three years and loved it. But, at the time that particular sport was not recognized as a true “extreme” or “intense” sport. It was not until college that I discovered my athleticism. During my spare time I did lots of running and it was very natural and easy for me. I also taught intramural aerobics on campus and truly enjoyed the energy involved. As far as I was concerned that was enough for me. Little did I know the challenge was yet to come…
After graduating college, I took on a job that required close to 100% travel and my eyes opened as I watched the physical toll it took on co-workers with poor eating and minimal physical activity. I found myself falling in that pattern and it didn’t feel good. At the same time I was slowly watching my father’s health deteriorate with full blown diabetes (taking daily insulin shots) and it suddenly became serious that other than my spirituality my health is priority.
I decided that I would not let my work lifestyle dictate my health. I had to set my own parameters and take control. And not before long, it became habitual to have a suitcase packed with running shoes, gym gear and making sure lodging included a fitness center and/or a gym close by. “No excuses.” It became a lifestyle change for me. And after a completing several marathons and duathlons I became so passionate and driven I wanted to learn more about health and fitness and challenge myself physically more than ever. I began reading on training and realized that in order to really have a balanced workout I need to incorporate both weight and cardio training. I realized that anyone at any size can truly benefit from weight training. I fell in love with it not to mention having such dramatic visible results. Sharing my knowledge with others and challenging them physically and seeing their results has truly become such a joy for me. I always tell my clients “It’s never too late make physical changes…I believe the best is always yet to come!!!” |
